Roadrunners Soccer Recap Oct. 23

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners (9-5-2, 4-2-1 in Region 16, 2-1-1 in the MCCAC) closed out their regular season schedule with a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Community College Archers on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game. The victory was a momentous one for the program. It ensured the program's most wins and best regular season record since the resumption of the program. SFCC also set the program record for the most shutouts since the resumption of the program.

"We were able to dominate possession and scoring chances in the first half, but we couldn't finish," said Roadrunners Head Soccer Coach Jaime Beltran. "It was a fairly even game, but played more in their half of the field. In the second half, we were able to go out and take care of business."

The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard in the 51st minute when sophomore forward Aaron Latimer of Amarillo, Texas scored off of a pass from sophomore Angelo Salomone of Australia.

"Aaron took on three players, took the ball to the corner and beat the goalkeeper," said Beltran. "He's been coming on late in the year for us and did an excellent job scoring that goal."

SFCC put the game away in the 87th minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder Samuel Sumo of Australia, courtesy of a pass from freshman defender Harrison Broom of England.

"We were able to catch St. Louis on the counterattack," said Beltran. "We were able to pretty much possess the ball for the rest the game and close out the second half."

SFCC registered 14 shots as a team in the game, seven of which were on goal. Sophomore midfielder Mani Hondroudakis of Australia led the team in shots with three, two of which were on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Aguero of Sedalia got the start in goal for SFCC. He recorded four saves to earn the shutout.

The Roadrunners have earned the third seed in the postseason tournament. SFCC will host East Central College in a Region 16 quarterfinal game on Saturday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex.
