Matt Brown is in his seventh season as the head men’s basketball coach at State Fair Community College. During the 2022-2023 season, Brown led SFCC to a 10-21 record and a loss in the Region 16 Tournament semi-final.

During the 2021-2022 season, Brown led SFCC to a 15-15 record and the Region 16 Tournament semi-final loss to Mineral Area College in overtime. 

He led his team to a 9-15 record during the shortened 2020-2021 campaign, which ended with a loss in the Region 16 Tournament semifinal. 

Brown led his team to a 16-14 record and an appearance in the Region 16 Tournament semifinal round during the 2019-2020 season. The campaign ended with a heartbreaking overtime loss. He led SFCC to a 12-16 record during the 2018-2019 season. 

During the 2017-2018 season, Brown led SFCC to a 19-10 record and an appearance in the region tournament semifinal round. He coached NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American Andre (A.J.) Walker. The Roadrunners also did good work in the classroom; all seven of the sophomores and freshmen who were academic qualifiers have continued their academic and athletic careers at four-year colleges or universities. SFCC finished second in the regular season standings in an extremely competitive Region 16.

Coach Brown has had 17 SFCC student-athletes play at Division I programs and nine played at Division II programs. 

He brings coaching experience from all levels of basketball to his position at SFCC.

Brown served as the head men’s basketball coach at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington during the 2016-2017 season. Brown oversaw all aspects of the men’s basketball program, including student-athlete welfare, academic and player development, as well as recruiting. He served as the facilities coordinator of the Wikoff Center. He was also an adjunct professor teaching lifetime fitness. Brown served as interim head women’s basketball coach in January 2017.

Brown was the boys’ varsity basketball coach at Northland Christian School from August 2015 to March 2016. Prior to that, he served as the boys’ middle school coach from September 2013 to March 2015.

Brown served as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City for six years beginning in April 2007. He oversaw the day-to-day operations of a Division I basketball program, including academic and player development, as well as recruiting and student athlete-welfare. He managed the men’s basketball operating, recruiting, and scholarship budget. Brown coordinated and planned the nonconference schedule in conjunction with the athletic director. He organized out-of- season conditioning and player development plans for student-athletes.

During his time at UMKC, he coached 13 players selected for the All-Academic team for the Summit League. His teams had a team Grade Point Average of 2.9. He coached seven players who were selected for the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. Brown coached eight players to All-Summit League honors and two players to the Summit League All-Newcomer Team.

From 2002 to 2007 he served as an assistant coach at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia for John Beilein, who currently works with the Detroit Pistons of the NBA. Brown helped his team to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2005 and a Sweet 16 in 2006. Brown was responsible for recruiting and on the floor coaching. He was the compliance liaison for the coaching staff. He was also responsible for scouting. Brown recruited student-athletes who were significant contributors to the success of the basketball program. During his time at West Virginia Brown coached Mike Gansey who is currently the General Manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Joe Mazzulla who is currently the Head Coach of the Boston Celtics.

Brown was an assistant coach at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia from 1997 to 2002, where he also worked for Coach Beilein. He was responsible for underclassmen recruiting and on the floor coaching and scouting. He was also responsible for film exchange. At Richmond, Brown coached Tony Dobbins, an Assistant Coach for the Boston Celtics.

He also mentored two NBA players, Jason Williams during his time at Marshall University and Joe Alexander at West Virginia University.

Brown served as an administrative assistant at the University of Florida in Gainesville from 1996-1997 for Head Coach Billy Donovan, who is now the head coach of the Chicago Bulls of the NBA. He was responsible for underclassmen recruiting. He was also responsible for film exchange and served as the co-camp coordinator.

In 1994-1996, he served as an administrative assistant for the basketball program at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia for Coach Donovan. He was responsible for underclassmen recruiting. He was the co-camp coordinator. He was also responsible for film exchange.

Brown began his collegiate coaching career at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, where he served as a student assistant coach from 1991 to 1993. Brown received his bachelor’s degree in History from Shippensburg University in 1994. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He received the 2013 Guardians of the Game Service Award from the NABC.

Brown and his wife Nikki have seven children, Ally, Gabe, Coen, Cade, Conner, Molly, and Raleigh and a granddaughter Fifi.
