Men’s Basketball Recaps Nov. 6-10

Nov. 6 Metropolitan Community College at Kansas City

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners emerged with a 66-62 victory on Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Kansas City against the Metropolitan Community College Wolves. The game was the first road contest for SFCC this season. It featured 11 lead changes and 8 ties.

SFCC got off to a hot start leading 17-6 in the game. The 11-point advantage was largest lead held by either team in the contest. The Wolves fought back to lead 35-33 at halftime but the Roadrunners made just enough plays down the stretch to secure the win.

"It was a good bounce back win for us," said Roadrunners Basketball Head Coach Matt Brown. "Metropolitan Community College is always a tough place to win. It was nice for Dewayne Charles and Dru Smith, who are both from Kansas City, to get a win in front of friends and family."

Sophomore guard/forward Caleb Coleman of Hammond, Indiana led SFCC in scoring with 15 points. Smith contributed 13 points. Freshman forward L.J. Bryan of Chelteham, Maryland pitched in with 10 points. He also registered a team-high two blocked shots. Charles pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and led the team in steals with four. Freshman wing Malcolm Townsel of Evanston, Illinois dished out a team-high five assists.

Nov.9 Lewis and Clark Community College at Mount Carmel, Illinois

State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners fell by a score of 80-72 in the opening portion of the Warrior Classic in Mount Carmel, Illinois on Friday, Nov. 9 against Lewis and Clark Community College.

"In the first half, we could not buy a basket," said Brown. "We were down 12 points at halftime. In the second half, we came all the way back and took an eight point lead. We were up six with four minutes to go and they made shots and we didn't."

Coleman led SFCC in scoring with 13 points. He also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman guard Damaria Franklin of Chicago, Illinois added 12 points and a team-high four assists. Smith also pitched in with 12 points. Bryan added 10 points. Townsel registered a team-high two blocked shots.

 

Nov. 10 Wabash Valley College at Mount Carmel, Illinois

State Fair Community College (SFCC) closed out the Warrior Classic with a come-from-behind 62-60 win over the host Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 10. Coleman knocked down a last-second shot to help SFCC secure the victory.

"That was our best win of the year so far," said Brown. "We were in almost the same scenario we were in against Lewis and Clark, except this time we were able to finish. We made them guard us. Wabash is a really good team. It was a good team win. We took care of the ball better and we were able to utilize the clock."

Coleman led a pair of Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 20 points. Bryan added 13 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Josh Humphries of Tampa, Florida dished out a four assists.

SFCC (3-2) will return home on Tuesday, Nov. 13 to host Southeastern Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
