Greyhounds defeat Roadrunners

The fourth-seeded Roadrunners lost 100-82 to the top-seeded and 16th-ranked Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds on March 3 in a Region 16 championship semifinal round at Lincoln University.

SFCC (11-19) led 20-18 with under 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Moberly took a 43-39 lead into halftime. The game featured 10 lead changes and three ties. Moberly pulled away in the second half, outscoring SFCC 57-43.

"Our guys competed really hard," said Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "We definitely came out with the right mindset. Moberly is a good team, but we battled them all the way to the end."

Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin led SFCC in scoring with 18 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Freshman guard Russell Baker contributed 14 points and tied for the lead in steals with freshman forward Jamar Kemp registering three each. Freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. added 11 points, and Kemp pitched in 10. Freshman center Isaac Bassey led in rebounds with six. Freshman forward Tyrone Gibbs and sophomore forward Amir Smith blocked one shot each.

"In the last two or three weeks of the season, we played some of our best basketball, excluding the road game against Mineral Area, even though our record doesn't show it."

Amir Smith was named to the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team. Onteral Woodson Jr. and sophomore guard Corey Mendez were named to the MCCAC All-Conference Second Team. Smith was also named to the NJCCA All-Region 16 Division I Men's Basketball First Team.
