Reivers defeat Roadrunners

The Roadrunners (11-17) fell 84-72 to the Iowa Western Community College Reivers from Council Bluffs. The game was part of the "Pink Night" cancer awareness event hosted by the SFCC Athletic Department.

State Fair erased an early 10-2 deficit to take a 15-12 lead in the first half, but the Reivers fought back to take a 37-30 lead into halftime.

"Our defense was key to helping us fight back from an early deficit," said Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "We got some baskets in transition, and hopefully we grow that type of play. At times we competed hard, and other times we gave up easy baskets."

SFCC trailed by 20 points in the second half. The Roadrunners worked to trim the lead to 78-70 using a full-court trapping defense, but the Reivers' offense was too effective to overcome.

Freshman guard Russell Baker led four Roadrunners in double figures with 18 points and led in steals with four. Sophomore guard Corey Mendez contributed 16 points and led in assists with four. Sophomore forward Amir Smith added a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. He also led in blocked shots with two. Freshman forward Tyrone Gibbs pitched in 13 points.

The Roadrunners wrap up the regular season schedule at 5 p.m. Feb. 25 against the Mineral Area College Cardinals in a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game at Park Hills.
