Roadrunners fall in final minutes

The Roadrunners lost a hard fought game against the 16th-ranked Indian Hills Community College Warriors from Ottumwa, Iowa, 75-73 on Feb. 15 at the Davis Center. The contest featured nine lead changes and six ties. 

SFCC (11-15) started well, building a 20-12 lead in the first half. The eight-point advantage was the largest held by either team. SFCC led 38-37 at halftime. 

With two minutes left in the game, sophomore forward Amir Smith went the length of the floor to lay the ball in and regain the lead 70-68. SFCC took a shot with about 30 seconds left, but the Warriors blocked it. With nine ticks left, the Warriors made a free throw to boost their lead by two. The Roadrunners rebounded the second free throw attempted but missed their final opportunity to tie or win the game. 

Smith led four Roadrunners in double figures with 21 points. He also led in rebounds with six and blocked shots with three. Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin contributed 13 points and tied for the lead in assists with freshman guard Russell Baker with five each. Baker also tossed in 12 points, and freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. added 10. Woodson also tied for the lead in steals with freshman forward Jamar Kemp with three each. 

"Our effort was good against a very talented team," said Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "We competed from the opening tipoff to the end of the game, but we turned the ball over too many times in the second half." 

The Roadrunners will host the nationally ranked Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds for Homecoming and Sophomore Night at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Davis Center.
