Roadrunners fall in overtime to Grizzlies

The Roadrunners traveled to West Plains Jan. 24 for a key Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game against the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies. SFCC (11-10, 0-3 in Region 16, 2-3 in the MCCAC) erased an 11-point deficit late in the contest by switching to a full-court pressure defense. They tied the score at 76 at the end of regulation but fell 94-81 in the OT.

"Our guys did a good job of being active and executing," said Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "They got in the passing lanes and made West Plains play a little faster than they wanted to. I give our guys credit for fighting and getting back into it."

Freshman guard Russell Baker led the Roadrunners in scoring with 30 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds, dished out a team-high four assists and recorded two steals.

"Russell was efficient," said Thomas. "He was able to get to the rim and provide good offense for us. Hopefully, he will be able to continue that level of play going forward."

Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin contributed 16 points. He also led in steals with five. Freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. finished the contest with a double-double scoring 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Colton Kolowski pitched in 11 points.

SFCC struggled from the free-throw line making only 17 out of 37 attempts for the game.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. the Roadrunners will host the Mineral Area College Cardinals, who currently sit on top of the Region 16 standings. This game is also part of the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference schedule.
