Southeastern defeats SFCC

The Roadrunners (10-7) started the second half of their season on Jan. 7 with a 73-64 loss to the Southeastern Community College Blackhawks in West Burlington, Iowa.

"We came out and executed fairly well offensively," said Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "We were ahead 17-11, but Southeastern went on a run, and we had difficulty guarding them in transition. They broke our press for some easy layups. We cut the deficit to five points, but they made their free throws down the stretch."

SFCC trailed 36-25 at halftime in a game that featured four lead changes and two ties. Southeastern pushed the advantage to 16 points in the second half, the largest lead by either team in the game.

Sophomore guard Corey Mendez and freshman guard Russell Baker tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 points each. Sophomore forward Amir Smith pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and registered six blocked shots. Freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. and sophomore guard Vonny Irvin added 10 points each. Irvin also dished out a team-high four assists along with three steals.

SFCC will return home on Jan. 10 to take on Link Year Prep from Branson. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. in the Davis Center.
