Roadrunners split games at Moberly classic

The Roadrunners traveled to the Midwest Bone and Joint Center Classic in Moberly Nov. 25-26. SFCC (8-3) opened on Friday against Highland Community College Cougars from Freeport, Illinois. 

SFCC led the game 45-40 at halftime, but the Cougars kept coming back in a game that featured 16 lead changes and nine ties. The largest lead held by either team was seven points. SFCC was down by three points with less than 10 seconds remaining when freshman forward Jamar Kemp drilled a deep three-point shot to tie the game at 88 with about three seconds left. 

Highland took the ball the length of the floor and drew a foul with one second on the clock. The Cougars made one of two free throws to take a one-point lead. SFCC attempted a half-court shot as time expired, but it bounced off the back of the rim. Highland escaped with the 89-88 victory.

 Freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. led four Roadrunners in double figure scoring with 21 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds and made four assists. Sophomore guard Corey Mendez contributed 18 points and recorded five assists. Freshman guard Lorenzo Lawrence II added 16 points. Sophomore forward Amir Smith just missed a double-double with 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin led in assists with nine, and Kemp led in steals with three. 

On Saturday, SFCC took on Life Prep Academy from Wichita, Kansas. SFCC took a 24-19 lead courtesy of a layup from Lawrence off a blocked shot from Kemp with about eight minutes left in the opening half. Life Prep Academy trimmed the Roadrunners halftime advantage to 45-40. In the second half, SFCC took control of the game and outscored Life Prep 51-41 to claim a 94-82 victory. 

Smith just missed a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots; he led the team in all three categories. Lawrence pitched in 19 points and a team-high four steals. Freshman center Isaac Bassey had his best game as a Roadrunner; he contributed 18 points and grabbed five rebounds. Bassey made six of seven shots from the field, six of six from the free-throw line, blocked a shot, and made a steal. Irvin registered a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 11 assists. 

SFCC will be at home Nov. 30 to take on the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at the Davis Center.
