Roadrunners defeat Greyhounds

The Roadrunners traveled to Fort Scott, Kansas, on Nov. 8 to take on the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds. SFCC (3-0) came away with a 78-56 victory.

"We were able to get off to good start to begin the game," said Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Kevin Thomas. "Our press worked well, which has caused problems for teams we've faced so far this year. We didn't rebound the ball very well in the first half and that allowed too many second and third chances for them."

SFCC led 36-33 at halftime and extended the advantage to 23 points in second half.

"In the second half, we did a little better job of rebounding the basketball," said Thomas. "We were able to get turnovers that created easy baskets, which was how we pulled away at the end of the game."

Sophomore guard Willie Jimerson Jr. led a pair of Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 27 points. He shot nine of 15 from the field and nine of 10 from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin registered a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds and recorded a team-high four assists. He also led the team in steals with four. Sophomore forward Amir Smith just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. He also led the team in blocked shots with four.

The Roadrunners will travel to Marshalltown, Iowa, to participate in the Meskwaki Classic Nov. 11-12. On Friday they will take on Graceland junior varsity. On Saturday they will take on the host Marshalltown Community College. Tipoff both nights is scheduled for 7 p.m.
