Roadrunners Swept at Indian Hills Classic

The 19th-ranked Roadrunners lost both their games Nov. 21-22 at the Indian Hills Classic in Ottumwa, Iowa.

SFCC (2-7) opened its portion of the classic falling to the sixth-ranked and host Indian Hills Community College Warriors 104-90.

The Roadrunners had a 43-41 lead at halftime. Sophomore guard Dondre Alexander led the charge offensively in the first half, scoring 26 of his game-high 43 points. He also knocked down seven three-point shots in the half.

"We did a good job sticking to our game plan in the first half," said Roadrunners Assistant Coach Josh Sash. "Indian Hills has some size, which is going to challenge a lot of teams this year. We played a zone defense and tried to keep the ball on the perimeter. Indian Hills shot 2 of 14 from beyond the three-point arc in the first half. We did a pretty good job of breaking their pressure and making some shots."

Indian Hills outscored the Roadrunners 63-47 in the second half. The Warriors also took advantage of their depth, playing 11 players in the game.

"Indian Hills is a good team," said Sash. "It doesn't take long for them to create three or four turnovers and all of a sudden it's a 10- or 12-point game."

Freshman guard Ra'Chaun Martin contributed 23 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Alexander led in steals with four and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman forward Selvedin Planincic registered a team-high three blocked shots.

SFCC fell to the William Penn University Junior Varsity Statesmen from Oskaloosa, Iowa, by a score of 100-83 on Saturday. The game featured three ties and three lead changes.

"We started the game off on a 9-0 run," said Sash. "William Penn made 18 of 40 from beyond the three-point arc. If you let any team make 18 three-point shots, it's going to be hard to win the game. They also ended up with 19 offensive rebounds. William Penn played hard."

Alexander led three Roadrunners in double figures with 33 points, including a perfect 12 of 12 from the free-throw line. Martin contributed 14 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Freshman forward Clint Robinson registered a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Robinson and Planincic tied for the team lead in blocks with two each.

"We have to do a better job of defending for 40 minutes," said Sash. "We need to rebound the ball better and shoot the ball better. We need to work on all facets of our game."
