Roadrunners Earn Postseason Honors

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Baseball program is coming off its most successful season since the program was reinstated. The recognition for all the hard work from the student-athletes is beginning to come in. Three Roadrunners earned recognition as part of the Region 16 Baseball All-Region Team, as voted by Region coaches.

Sophomore infielder Gavin Jones earned First-Team All-Region 16 and Region 16 Baseball All-Defensive Team for his play at shortstop.

Jones led the team in slugging percentage (.602), home runs (12), RBI (50), hits (54) and runs scored (43). He led SFCC with 100 total bases and 21 extra-base hits. He finished the season second in batting average (.325) and stolen bases (10).

"Gavin had a great year both offensively and defensively," said Roadrunners Baseball Head Coach Jud Kindle. "He was the leader of our team and a big reason why we were able to do what we did. His recognition is well-deserved."

Sophomore pitcher Bill Cain was named First-Team All-Region. Cain appeared in 15 games for the Roadrunners as both a starter and relief pitcher. He tied for the team lead with six wins. He tossed three complete games, which was good enough to finish second on the staff. Cain finished the year with a 2.95 earned run average. He struck out 69 batters (first), while pitching 61 innings (third). He was also named Region 16 Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 15-21.

"Bill also had a great year for us," said Kindle. "He threw a couple of big games, like the complete game that he had against Crowder, along with some other performances. He threw a lot of innings for us."

Sophomore pitcher Jack Schmedding earned Second-Team All -Region on the mound for SFCC. Schmedding tied for the team lead in victories with six in 11 starts. He led the pitching staff with four complete games and finished second on the team in innings pitched with 61 and one-third. He struck out 60 batters and compiled a 4.26 earned run average.

"Jack was very consistent for us all year," said Kindle. "One of the reasons that we won so many games was the fact that our pitching staff was so consistent. That has a lot to do with what Coach Cavness was doing with our pitchers. The pitching staff worked extremely hard to achieve the success that they did."
