SFCC baseball game recaps Feb.17-18

Feb. 17, Marshalltown Community College at Dey Field in Liberty Park Stadium

The Roadrunners opened the home portion of its 2018 schedule with a doubleheader against the Marshalltown Community College Tigers from Marshalltown, Iowa. SFCC (3-4) swept both games 2-1 and 3-2 in a pair of seven-inning contests.

SFCC scored two runs in the bottom of the third of game one. The Tigers responded with a single run in the top of the sixth inning to close the scoring.

Sophomore infielder Steven Bradbury registered a hit and a run scored for SFCC. Sophomore catcher Derek Shikles registered a double and a run scored. Sophomore utility player Zack Ehlen drove in a pair of runs and stole a base.

Sophomore pitcher Jake McMahill (1-0) got the start on the mound for SFCC. He pitched six innings, scattering three hits while striking out six. Sophomore pitcher Brett Wilbanks closed the door in the seventh, pitching one inning and striking out one to record his first save of the season.

In game two, SFCC scored a single run in the third. Marshalltown tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. SFCC responded with a run in the fifth and tacked on one more in the sixth. Marshalltown finished the scoring with one run in the top of the seventh.

Six Roadrunners registered one hit each in game two. Sophomore outfielder Tyler Crane, sophomore first baseman/pitcher Jacob Mitchell and Bradbury scored a run each. Freshman outfielder P.J. Esposito and freshman catcher/first baseman Kyle Clark drove in a run each.

Sophomore pitcher Chase Plymell (1-1) pitched five innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out four.  Sophomore pitcher Josiah Imhoff got the last two outs to record his first save of the season.

Feb. 18, Marshalltown Community College at Dey Field in Liberty Park Stadium

The Roadrunners finished the three-game sweep of Marshalltown with an 11-1 victory in six innings. The Roadrunners offense pounded out 11 hits in the contest.

SFCC scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Marshalltown responded with a run in the top of the third. SFCC scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to put the game away.

Crane led the SFCC offense with three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Clark, Bradbury and Shikles all recorded two hits apiece. Esposito drove in a pair of runs, and Mitchell had two RBI. Bradbury also drove in a run. Ehlen recorded a stolen base and two runs scored. Clark scored three times in the game.

Freshman pitcher Logan Bexton (1-1) tossed a complete game, allowing four hits and one earned run.

"It all starts with our pitching," said Head Coach Jud Kindle. "We had three good outings from our starting pitchers. Our relievers did a good job of getting out of some tough situations. Our offense finally came on in game three. We took a better approach at the plate."
