SFCC baseball recaps March 15-18

March 15, Southeastern Community College at Dey Field, Liberty Park Stadium

The Roadrunners took on the Blackhawks from West Burlington, Iowa. Southeastern scored three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. SFCC starting pitcher freshman Brendan Owsley struggled early and was lifted from the game. Southeastern added three more runs in the inning to take a 6-0 lead. 

Freshman Zack Ehlen hit a double to right field and advanced to third base on a ground out by freshman Tyler Crane. Ehlen scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-1. Freshman Steven Bradbury drew a walk and moved to second base on another wild pitch. Bradbury advanced to the third on an errant pickoff attempt by the Blackhawks. Sophomore Derek Miller drove in Bradbury with a base hit. 

Southeastern scored eight more runs in the second inning and six in the third defeating SFCC 21-2 in seven innings because of the run rule. 

Ehlen, Miller and sophomore Tanner Cantrell had the only three hits in the game for SFCC. Owsley took the loss. 

March 16, St. Louis Community College at St. Louis

The Roadrunners took on the St. Louis Community College Archers in a Region 16 doubleheader. The Archers won both games 11-1 and 10-8. 

In game one, both teams scored a run in the first inning. The Archers exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the third and won the game because of the run rule. 

Bradbury singled to left center field to score Crane who was hit by pitch. Cantrell provided the only other hit. 

Sophomore pitcher Payton Rawlins pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs and eight earned runs while striking out two. 

In game two, SFCC scored six runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Archers scored four in the bottom of the fourth inning. St. Louis took a 10-7 lead with five runs in the sixth. SFCC added a run, but they could get no closer. 

Bradbury, Miller and freshmen Jacob Clifton registered two hits each. Cantrell added a pair of RBIs. Freshman Chase Swisher drove in two runs. 

Freshman pitcher Jake McMahill pitched five innings, giving up five runs and only one earned run. He struck out six. Freshman pitcher Kevin Diaz took the loss in relief; he gave up three earned runs. 

March 18, St. Louis Community College at Dey Field, Liberty Park Stadium

The Roadrunners were swept 6-2 and 8-0 in another Region 16 doubleheader against the St. Louis Community College Archers. 

SFCC scored two runs in the first inning. Ehlen led off with an infield hit to third base and stole second base to move into scoring position for Crane who was hit by a pitch. SFCC used good base running to execute a double steal to move runners to second and third. 

Ehlen scored the first run on a balk. Cantrell struck out on a dropped third strike, but Crane scampered home to beat the return throw from the first baseman to the plate to give SFCC a 2-0 lead. 

St. Louis scored a run in the third inning off freshman starting pitcher Roberto Ramirez. The Archers tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. 

Ramirez was lifted from the game after pitching six innings and giving up seven hits, two earned runs and striking out three. The Archers scored four runs in the seventh inning. Ramirez (1-1) took the loss. 

Ehlen had a pair of hits along with a run scored and two stolen bases. Crane had the other hit. 

In game two, St. Louis opened with a two-run homerun to left field in the third inning. The Archers added three more runs in the fourth inning. 

Freshman pitcher Chase Plymell started for SFCC and pitched six innings, giving up six runs on six hits. He was the losing pitcher. SFCC had three hits in the contest. 

"We got out-hit and out-pitched," said Head Coach Jud Kindle. "St. Louis played better defense than we did." The Roadrunners record stands at 9-13, 2-10 in Region 16
