Aug. 22 Kansas City Kansas Community College at Kansas City, Kansas
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners traveled to Kansas City, Kansas to take on the Kansas City Kansas Community College Lady Blue Devils on Thursday, Aug. 22 to open their 2019 campaign. SFCC fell by a score of 5-0
"We were very uncomfortable from the kickoff, in the first six minutes we took a lot of pressure," said Lady Roadrunners Associate Head Coach Dan Martin. "I think there were a lot of nerves involved and a lot of inexperience from players who hadn't played at the college level. Kansas City Kansas scored two goals early in the first half. We started to get a little more comfortable, but we gave up another goal right before halftime."
Sophomore midfielder Hailie Acton of Fulton led the team in shots with two, one of which was on target. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Martinez of Bolivia also recorded a shot on target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Curphey of Raymore got the start in goal for SFCC. She recorded 13 saves in the match.
"Samantha played a great game," said Martin. "I know that the score line was not in our favor, but she had a lot of good saves and faced a lot of shots."
Aug. 24 Neosho County Community College at Chanute, Kansas
The Lady Roadrunners continued their season opening a four game road trip on Saturday, Aug. 24 when they traveled to Chanute, Kansas to take on the Neosho County Community College Panthers. SFCC dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision.
"I thought it was a much better performance than our first game," said Martin. "We were little bit more confident in the first half. We put more pressure on Neosho."
Neosho got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute and again in the 27th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. SFCC got its first goal of the season from sophomore midfielder Kimberly Rosas of El Paso, Texas.
"Kim was able to push up the field and got a nice through ball on a breakaway from freshman defender Maleah Ray of Columbia, Missouri and she was able to put it away."
The Lady Roadrunners registered seven shots as a team, five of which were on goal. Acton recorded three shots on goal and Rosas had three shots, two of which were on goal.
Curphey recorded five saves in goal for SFCC.
I was very happy with our players," said Martin. "We made an adjustment in the way we came out and we didn't have much time to work on the adjustment. I thought the adjustment in our lineup really helped us. We are moving in the right direction."
The Lady Roadrunners (0-2) will return to action on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
