Women's basketball recaps for Feb.19-24

Feb. 19, Vincennes University at Vincennes, Indiana

The Lady Roadrunners traveled to Vincennes, Indiana, to take on 21st ranked Vincennes University. SFCC fell by a score of 78-57.

Vincennes started the game well leading 20-6 at the end of the first quarter. Vincennes extended the advantage to 41-26 at halftime. SFCC tried to fight their way back into the contest outscoring Vincennes 21-19 in the third quarter. The Lady Trailblazers outscored the Lady Roadrunners 18-10 in the fourth quarter.

"We just dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first quarter," said Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We took some good shots, but they just didn't fall. When you get that far down, it's very difficult to come back. We got the lead down to nine points two times, but we just couldn't get any closer."

Sophomore guard Maya Brewer led three Lady Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 14 points. Sophomore guard Ren'Cia Rolling contributed 13 points and dished out a team-leading seven assists and three steals. Sophomore guard/forward Catie Kaifes added 11 points. Sophomore center Grace Morrow pulled down a team high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Jazzmyn Elston and freshman forward/center Michaela Bethel tied for the team lead in blocked shots with two.

Feb. 21, Jefferson College at Hillsboro, Missouri

The Lady Roadrunners traveled to Hillsboro for an important Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) game. SFCC emerged with a 74-40 victory.

SFCC took control of the game outscoring Jefferson 24-6 in the second quarter to take a 41-22 lead into halftime.

"We were able to bounce back from the loss to Vincennes," said Bucher. "We kept our turnovers down and did a better job of rebounding the basketball. Grace Morrow played well. She is starting to play better. We needed her presence inside. Ren'Cia also played well."

Kaifes and Elston tied for the team lead in scoring with 14 points. Morrow contributed a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. She also registered a team-high four blocked shots. Rolling led the team in steals with four and dished out a team-high nine assists.

Feb. 24, Mineral Area College at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners (13-16, 4-6 in Region 16, 4-6 in the MCCAC) relied on their sophomores to erase a two-point third quarter deficit against the Mineral Area College Cardinals at the homecoming and sophomore night contest. SFCC won 62-54. The game finished the Region 16 and MCCAC schedule for both teams.

SFCC shot the ball well from all over the floor and led 24-12 at the end of the first quarter. At half, SFCC led 35-26. However, the Lady Cardinals dominated the third quarter action to set up a fourth quarter rally.

"Grace gave us some very big minutes in the first half," said Bucher. "She is starting to come around inside. Maya stepped up in the last seven or eight minutes of the game and that is what we want our sophomores to do. It was her game and she took over. We did a good job of rebounding the basketball and defending their three-point shot. That third quarter was a struggle, but I was pleased with the way that our team came out in the fourth quarter and fought."

Brewer led the team in scoring with 21 points. Kaifes contributed 14, and Morrow added 11 points.

Sophomores Ren'Cia Rolling, Maya Brewer, Catie Kaifes, and Grace Morrow were honored at halftime of the men's game.

At 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, the fifth seeded Lady Roadrunners travel to Park Hills for the Region 16 championship quarterfinal round game against fourth seeded Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals.
