Lady Roadrunner recaps for Jan. 9 and 13

Jan. 9, Southeastern Community College at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners hosted the Southeastern Community College Lady Blackhawks from West Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday, Jan. 9. The Lady Blackhawks emerged with a 79-75 victory. Southeastern came into the contest ranked 14th in NJCAA Division II basketball poll. The game featured five lead changes and two ties.

Head Coach Kevin Bucher missed the game due to illness. Assistant Coach Jade Perry coached the team in his absence.

Southeastern led the game 15-9 with under four minutes remaining in the opening quarter. SFCC trimmed the advantage to two points trailing 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. SFCC fought back to take a 32-30 lead into halftime, despite 12 first half turnovers.

Southeastern took the biggest lead for either team 68-59 with about six minutes remaining. SFCC cut the deficit to two with about one minute 30 seconds remaining in the contest, but Southeastern made the plays in the final minute for the win.

"I was pleased with how our players fought back in the game, but we could have done much better," said Perry." We need to do better if we want to do well in the region."

Sophomore guard/forward Catie Kaifes led the Lady Roadrunners in scoring with 29 points. She knocked down five of nine three-point attempts and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Maya Brewer contributed 17 points and lead in assists with five. Freshman guard Jazzmyn Elston added 11 points. Freshman forward/center Michaela Bethel registered a team-high two blocked shots. Sophomore guard Ren'Cia Rolling and Brewer tied for the team lead in steals with four.

 

Jan. 13, Three Rivers Community College at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners took the floor against the Three Rivers Community College Lady Raiders from Poplar Bluff on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Davis Center. SFCC got its Region 16 and MCCAC season off to a good start with a 94-87 victory. The game featured six lead changes and five ties.

"It was a fast paced game with many shots taken by both teams," said Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "The second half was more of a half-court game. I thought Grace (Morrow) gave us some good minutes inside. We have timing issues that we will be able to work on now that we have 10 players."

SFCC led 21-19 at the end of the first quarter and 39-32 at halftime. SFCC shot the ball well from beyond the arc knocking down 50 percent in three-point attempts. The Lady Roadrunners out rebounded the Lady Raiders 49-31.

SFCC was led in scoring by Brewer with 23 points. Kaifes contributed 22 points, knocking down a team-high five three-point shots. Elston pitched in 20, and Rolling added 11 points and led in assists with seven and in steals with three. Morrow registered 10 points and tied for team lead in rebounds with eight with freshman forward Brionna Hill. Kaifes led the team in blocked shots with two.

The Lady Roadrunners record currently stands at 9-8, 1-0 in Region 16, 1-2 in the MCCAC. SFCC will be back on their home court at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, for another big Region 16 and MCCAC game against the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds.
