Softball players earn academic awards

Five State Fair Community College softball players have earned the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Easton All-American Scholar Athlete awards. The award goes to student-athletes who achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher for the past year's academic performance.

The awards went to freshmen Emily Wilson ofOak Grove, Tessia Balke of Cole Camp, Kylie Johnson of Hallsville, Macy Buzzanga of Knob Noster, and Victoria McCloud of Houston, Missouri.

"Our goal is to eventually have the whole team receive this honor," said Head Coach Lyndsey Talbot. "I tell the girls all the time that you can play softball for up to four years, but you are going to be working for the next forty. They need to make sure that they have their priorities straight. We take academics very seriously in the program."

Coach Talbot reinforces academic performance with her players that go beyond the traditional study halls. She monitors their academic progress by checking grades and assignments completed. A high grade point average helps student-athletes qualify for academic scholarships when they transfer to the next school.

"I am very proud of the accomplishments of these five student-athletes because they not only lead academically, but they also lead in other areas of our program."
