Aug. 22 Kansas City Kansas Community College at Kansas City, Kansas
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners opened the 2019 season with a 1-1 double overtime tie against the Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils on Thursday, August 22.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead into halftime. SFCC got on the scoreboard in the second half with a goal from freshman forward Landon Naylor of Sedalia. Freshman forward Jordan Bishop of Australia provided the assist on the goal.
"Landon was in the game for five minutes before he had a golden opportunity and he made it count," said Roadrunners Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "Jordan Bishop was able to receive the ball and shield two defenders and laid it off to Landon in the perfect spot. Both of those guys deserve a lot of credit for the way that goal went."
Both teams had chances to win the game in the overtime periods, but were unable to convert.
"It was a well-played game," said Beltran." I think our players learned a lot and we are looking forward to our next game on Saturday."
As a team, SFCC registered 17 shots, seven of which were on target. Freshman midfielder Leo Fernandez of Brazil led the team in shots with three, two of which were on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Blaise Mucho of Houston, Texas got the start in goal for the Roadrunners. He recorded four saves. Freshman goalkeeper Nicolas Olmos of Bolivia finished the game. He recorded two saves.
Aug. 24 Neosho County Community College at Chanute, Kansas
SFCC continued their season opening four-game road trip on Saturday, Aug. 24 when they traveled to Chanute, Kansas to take on Neosho County Community College. SFCC lost by a score of 5-2.
Neosho got off to a quick start scoring the first five goals of the game.
"We started out slow," said Beltran. "Neosho was high pressing. We gave up a silly goal about 15 minutes into the game; we could've easily recovered from that one. On the second goal, we tried to clear a ball and it hit the back of one of our defenders. We were down 2-0, but still felt like we had a good chance. We were able to put pressure on them. We had a seven minute stretch in the second half where everything that could have possibly bounced wrong did."
SFCC got a goal late in the game. Naylor scored on a penalty kick after he was tackled in the box. The Roadrunners got another goal two minutes later when freshman midfielder Francisco Rojas of Sedalia found the back of the net off of a pass from sophomore forward Aaron Latimer of Amarillo, Texas.
SFCC registered nine shots, five of which were on goal. Mucho and Olmos once again shared time in the goal.
The Roadrunners (0-1-1) will return to action on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m.
