Men’s Soccer Recap Sept. 29

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners (4-5-2, 1-2-1 in Region 16) picked up an important 2-1 victory over Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in a Region 16 match on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex.

MCC scored first with about 24 minutes remaining in the opening half and would take 1-0 advantage into halftime.

SFCC got its offense started by drawing a foul inside the 18-yard box. Freshman midfielder Mani Hondroudakis of Australia put it past the goalkeeper to tie the game at one with 43 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the match.

Sophomore midfielder Vasbert Ledger of Lafayette, Louisiana scored the game-winning goal with a diving header off of a great pass from fellow sophomore forward Buhirwa Issa of Fort Worth, Texas with about 42 minutes and 29 seconds remaining.

"It was probably the best goal that we have scored all year," said SFCC Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "We were able to build that attack all the way up from the back. We were able to connect several passes and eventually got the final touch to go in the back of the net."

A solid defensive effort helped the Roadrunners to close out the contest and secure the victory.

"We were able to possess the ball at the end the game," said Beltran. "That was good to see."

Ledger had five shots and two on goal. As a team, SFCC recorded 12 shots with five on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Juan Jurkevicius got the start in the net for SFCC and recorded three saves.
