Men’s Soccer Game Recaps September 22-23

Sept. 22 St. Charles Community College at Cottleville, Missouri

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners lost 4-1 to St. Charles Community College Cottleville, Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 22 in an important Region 16 matchup.

St. Charles cored first with a goal in the third minute. The Cougars extend the advantage with another goal in the 35th minute. SFCC got on the scoreboard with a goal in the 50th minute, courtesy of a penalty kick from freshman midfielder Mani Hondroudakis of Australia. The Cougars added two more goals in the second half to seal the win.

"We did not play well in the match against St. Charles," said SFCC Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran.

SFCC totaled 27 shots in the match, 10 of which were on goal. Hondroudakis led the team with six shots, three of which were on goal. Sophomore goalkeepers Juan Jurkevicius of Bolivia and Reece Gabbert of Sedalia split time in the net for the Roadrunners. Jurkevicius recorded four saves and Gabbert recorded one.

Sept. 23 Southwestern Illinois College at Sedalia

SFCC (3-5-2, 0-2-1 in Region 16, 0-2 in MCCAC) lost a close match, despite a strong rally in the second half, 4-3 to Southwestern Community College on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Both teams were scoreless in the first half, but Southwestern Illinois scored in the 47th minute. They added a second goal in the 60th minute.

The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard courtesy of another penalty kick from Hondroudakis in the 62nd minute.

Southwestern Illinois found the back of the net once again in the 68th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Vasbert Ledger of Lafayette, Louisiana scored on a pass from Sebastian Aguero of Sedalia.

Southwestern Illinois scored again in the 86th minute to make the score 4-2.

Ledger scored his second goal of the match in the 88th minute on a pass from freshman defender Jackson Ralph of New Zealand to make the score 4-3.

"We did not play well," said Beltran. "We showed a lack of discipline, that we will do everything in our power to correct."

Jurkevicius got the start in the net for SFCC. He recorded four saves. The Roadrunners had 21 shots, nine of them were on goal. Ledger led his team with six shots, four of them were on goal.
