Men’s Soccer game recaps Sept. 11-16

Sept. 11 Missouri Valley College at Sedalia

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners beat the Missouri Valley College Vikings in a close match on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

SFCC got on the scoreboard first with less than 28 minutes remaining in the first half, courtesy of a goal from freshman midfielder Samuel Sumo of Australia off of a pass from freshman forward Sebastian Aguero of Sedalia.

Missouri Valley answered off of a free kick with less than 17 minutes to go in the opening half to tie the match at one. The match remained even into halftime.

The Vikings opened the scoring in the second half with less than 44 minutes remaining in the game to take the lead 2-1.

State Fair answered with a goal by Aguero with less than 20 minutes remaining in the match, courtesy of a pass from freshman forward Jayson Ross of Rolla. The Roadrunners scored the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match on a breakaway from freshman midfielder Bosco Irankunda of Houston, Texas. Freshman midfielder Mani Hondroudakis of Australia contributed the assist.

SFCC recorded 14 shots in the match, seven of which were on goal. Aguero led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Juan Jurkevicius of Bolivia got the victory in the net for the birds with three saves in the match.

"Today we did a better job of dealing with adversity," said SFCC Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "We came back and were able to keep our composure a little better and get the victory, even though it wasn't as pretty as I would've liked."

 

Sept. 15 Crowder College at Neosho, Missouri

SFCC traveled to Neosho on Saturday, Sept. 15 where they tied 1-1 after double overtime against the Crowder College Roughriders in a key Region 16 match.

SFCC got on board first with a goal in the 32nd minute courtesy of a penalty kick from Hondroudakis. The Roughriders answered with a goal of their own in the 41st minute.

"It was a crazy game," said Beltran. "We had so many opportunities to score in the game. The goalkeepers from both teams played well. We also saved a penalty kick in overtime. We really took it to them in the second overtime, but we just could not finish."

As a team, SFCC registered 36 shots in the match, 16 of the shots on goal. Jurkevicius recorded seven saves for SFCC.

Crowder had 16 shots as a team, five of which were on goal.

 

September 16 Central Methodist University at Sedalia

SFCC (3-3-2, 0-2 in Region 16) played the Central Methodist University Eagles in Sedlia on Sunday, Sept.16 with the game ending in a 2-2 tie.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a goal off of a rebound with 18 minutes remaining on the first half clock; a lead that would hold going into halftime.

SFCC tied the game with a goal from freshman midfielder Angelo Salomone of Australia on a corner kick with 39 minutes remaining in regulation with the assist from freshman forward Aaron Latimer of Amarillo, Texas.

The Roadrunners took the lead with a goal off of a penalty kick by Hondroudakis with 14 minutes and 29 seconds remaining in regulation. The Eagles matched the point off another corner kick from the top of the box to tie the match.

Regulation ended with the 2-2 tie. The Roadrunners had three shots to win the game with less than seven minutes remaining in the first overtime, but the Central Methodist defense held strong.

The game remained tied at the end of the first overtime. The scoring drought continued in the second overtime and the match ended 2-2.

"This was another game where we created opportunities all day long, but we just couldn't put them away," said Beltran. "

Sophomore goalkeeper Reece Gabbert of Sedalia got the start in the net for SFCC, where he recorded two saves in the match. Aguero led his team in shots with seven, four of which were on goal.
