Men’s Soccer Recap Sept. 5-9

Sept.5 Jefferson College at Sedalia

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners opened the Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) portion of their schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5. SFCC fell to the Jefferson College Vikings, falling by a score of 2-0 in Sedalia.

Jefferson got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute scoring off of a free kick. The Vikings took a 1-0 lead into halftime and added another goal in the 70th minute off of another free kick opportunity.

"Jefferson did a good job with their free kick opportunities," said SFCC Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "We defended their free kicks very poorly. That was the story of the game. Other than that, I thought we were equal to, or better than, them in many areas. We just didn't take advantage."

Sophomore midfielder Vasbert Ledger of Lafayette, Louisiana led the Roadrunners in shots with four.

Freshman forward Aaron Latimer of Amarillo, Texas and freshman midfielder Mani Hondroudakis of Australia registered two shots each. Sophomore goalkeeper Juan Jurkevicius of Bolivia got the start for SFCC and registered eight saves in the match.

Sept. 9 John Wood Community College at Quincy, Illinois

SFCC (2-3, 0-1 in Region 16, 0-1 in the MCCAC) traveled to Quincy, Illinois to take on John Wood Community College on Sunday, Sept. 9. SFCC fell by a score of 3-1.

"This game was a last-minute change to our schedule because of weather," said Beltran. "We were a little bit out of sorts."

SFCC got on the scoreboard first in the opening half on a goal by freshman forward Sebastian Aguero of Sedalia. Freshman midfielder Marcus Loppes of Brazil provided the assist.

The Roadrunners led at halftime 1-0.

"It was a strange game," said Beltran. "It seemed like the more we went forward and the better we played, the worse our situation got. It was one of those odd games. John Wood scored a couple of goals in the second half and made us go away from our game plan. We hit a crossbar and a post. John Wood got another goal off of a counterattack."

Jurkevicius got another start in net for SFCC. He recorded seven saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Reece Gabbert of Sedalia had one save. As a team, SFCC recorded 14 shots, seven of which were on goal. Ledger led SFCC in shots with four; two of them were on goal.
