Men’s Basketball Recap Feb.13-16

Feb. 13 Missouri State University-West Plains

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners defeated the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies in an 88-74 victory on Wednesday, Feb. 13 inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The game was part of the Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference schedule and the third consecutive win for SFCC.

The Roadrunners led 33-25 with five minutes and 15 seconds remaining the opening half. SFCC took a 41-38 lead into the locker room. The Grizzlies went on a 5-0 run to open the second half and take a 43-41 lead.

SFCC held West Plains to 31 points the remainder of the game to emerge with the victory.

Freshman guard Damaria Franklin of Chicago, Illinois came off the bench to spark the Roadrunners' offense with 33 points on 13 of 18 shooting from the field. He knocked down seven of his nine three-point attempts. Sophomore guard/forward Caleb Coleman of Hammond, Indiana contributed 17 points and eight rebounds and registered a pair of steals. Freshman forward L.J. Bryan of Cheltenham, Maryland contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Dru Smith of Kansas City, Missouri pitched in with 12 points. Redshirt freshman guard Alonde LeGrand of Harlem, New York and sophomore guard Dewayne Charles of Kansas City, Missouri tied for the team lead in assists with five. Charles also had two steals.

"I think we played our best basketball in the last two weeks," said Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Matt Brown. "We played well against Metropolitan Community College. We played really well against Three Rivers and then we were off for 10 days. I was kind of worried that the time off would hurt us, but really I think we are playing better now than we started the season. Hopefully, we are clicking at the right time. That was a good win for us, they are a good team."

Feb. 16 Moberly Area Community College at Sedalia

The SFCC Roadrunners fell to the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds 91-72 on Saturday, Feb. 16 inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The game was part of the Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference schedule for both teams. The game was also part of the Homecoming and 50th Anniversary celebration at SFCC.

The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage. SFCC went on a nice run to take a 32-31 lead with about 50 seconds remaining in the opening half. Moberly took a 34-32 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Greyhounds outscored SFCC 57-40 in the second half to secure the victory.

SFCC (12-13, 2-5 in Region 16, 4-5 in the MCCAC) was led in scoring by Franklin with 33 points on 11-17 from the field and 4-8 from beyond the arc. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Coleman contributed 17 points and a team-high two blocked shots. Charles dished out a team-high six assists in the game.
