Roadrunners Basketball Recap Jan. 16-19

Jan.16 Moberly Area Community College at Moberly

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners lost 88-55 to the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds.in a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

The Greyhounds led 6-2 early in the game and never looked back. Moberly used an outstanding defensive effort to force the Roadrunners into 25 turnovers.

"Moberly is a very good team," said Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Matt Brown. "Their defensive pressure was too much for us early in the game. They are probably the best team that I've seen in our region so far."

Freshman guard Damaria Franklin of Chicago, Illinois led SFCC in scoring with 16 points. Freshman forward L.J. Bryan of Chelteham, Maryland registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Alonde LeGrand of Harlem, New York and sophomore guard Dru Smith of Kansas City, Missouri tied for the team lead in assists with four each. Sophomore guard/forward Caleb Coleman of Hammond, Indiana registered a team-high two blocked shots.

 

Jan. 19 Highland Community College-Kansas at Sedalia

The SFCC Roadrunners played host to the second ranked team in NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball, the Highland Community College-Kansas Scotties from Highland, Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 19. SFCC (9-10, 0-2 in Region 16, 2-2 in the MCCAC) defeated Highland 87-78 in double overtime. The game featured 12 lead changes and nine ties.

The Roadrunners got off to a quick start leading 11-5 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the opening half. The Scotties fought back to tie the game at 28 before going into halftime. The Scotties knocked down a big three-point shot off an offensive rebound to send the game into overtime tied at 63.

Both teams scored eight points in overtime to send the game into the second overtime. SFCC outscored Highland 16-7 to secure the victory.

"In the second overtime we were able to get a couple of crucial stops on the defensive end and knock down some free throws," said Brown. "Malcolm Townsel did a nice job for us. Alonde made a three-point shot, that's something he's been working on all year. I was really proud of him. I thought Mike Stone also did a good job for us tonight. We made just enough plays down the stretch to win."

Smith led four Roadrunners in double figures scoring with 23 points. He also registered a team-high two blocked shots. Townsel contributed 18 points. Franklin pitched in with 11 points and four steals.

LeGrand added 10 points. Sophomore guard Dewayne Charles of Kansas City, Missouri dished out a team-high five assists. Bryan pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds.
