Roadrunners Wrap-Up Preseason

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners went 3-0 in the John A. Logan Jamboree in Carbondale, Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 21. The games marked the final competition before the regular season begins.

The format for the scrimmages was two 20-minute running clock halves. SFCC took on Lake Land College from Illinois and emerged victorious 40-38.

"It was a good game for us," said Roadrunners Basketball Head Coach Matt Brown. "We were able to play 13 guys in this game, which is good because we are still trying to find the right combinations of players. We rotated a lot of guys in and out and we played a lot better as a whole. It also gave us two more weeks of practice."

Sophomore guard Dru Smith of Kansas City, Missouri led the Roadrunners in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore guard/forward Caleb Coleman of Hammond, Indiana pulled down a team-high six rebounds and tied for the team lead in assists with three with freshman guard Damaria Franklin of Chicago, Illinois.

The Roadrunners beat Olney Central College in their second scrimmage of the day by a score of 55-48. The Roadrunners led by 24 points in the first half. Olney Central fought back outscoring SFCC 33-18 in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

Coleman led SFCC with 12 points. He pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and also contributed a team-high two blocks and two steals to lead his team in all categories. Redshirt sophomore forward Mike Stone of Brooklyn, New York added 10 points.

"Our defense is getting much better," said Brown. "The timing is getting much better on offense. We shared the ball a lot better."

In their final scrimmage, a match that featured four lead changes and six ties, State Fiar took on Shawnee Community College from Illinois and won 56-48.

Smith led the team in scoring once again with 13 points. Freshman forward L.J. Bryan of Chelteham, Maryland led the team in rebounding with five. Sophomore guard Dewayne Charles of Kansas City, Missouri led the team in assists with three. He also tied for the team lead in steals with two with sophomore guard Josh Humphries of Tampa, Florida.

The Roadrunners will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 2 in the McDonald's Classic against the Missouri Valley College Junior Varsity. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
