Men's Basketball Region Tournament Recap

March 1, Mineral Area College at Jefferson City, Missouri

The Roadrunners saw the season end on March 1 in the semifinal round of the Region 16 tournament. The second-seeded Roadrunners (19-10) fell to the third-seeded Mineral Area College Cardinals 76-64 at Jason Gym on the Lincoln University campus.

SFCC jumped out to an early 9-2 advantage in a game that featured 10 lead changes. Mineral Area took a 39-35 lead into halftime.

The Roadrunners struggled offensively for most of the game, shooting 40 percent from the field and 33 percent from the three-point line. SFCC only knocked down four out of 15 free-throw attempts for the game. The Roadrunners cut into the advantage on a few occasions in the second half, but Mineral Area had the answer each time.

"We didn't shoot the ball well from the free-throw line, and we missed a lot of easy shots around the basket," said Head Coach Matt Brown. "We had a good year overall, finishing 19-10 and in second place in the region. You have to look at the big picture sometimes. This wasn't how we wanted to finish the season, but it was a very good year."

Freshman guard Tyreek Scott-Grayson led the Roadrunners in scoring with 18 points. FreshmanLePear Toles registered a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Derrick Brock, Jr. also added 11 points. Sophomore guard Andre (A.J.) Walker and Toles tied for the team lead in assists with three. Walker led the team in steals with three. Scott-Grayson led the team in blocked shots with two.

"I'm very excited for Isaac (Bassey) going on to the University of Illinois-Chicago," said Brown. "He and Christian Brown were the only returning players when I got here last year. LePear is going to Akron. Tyreek and A.J. have multiple Division I offers. I think we'll have six or seven students commit to schools before the semester ends. We look forward to seeing them graduate and move on to their new colleges or universities. I'm excited to see what the future holds for them."

Walker and Scott-Grayson were selected for the 2017-2018 Missouri Community College Athletic Conference first team and for the All-Region 16 first team.
