SFCC basketball recaps for Jan. 9 and 13

Jan. 9, Graceland University JV at Sedalia

The Roadrunners returned home to the Davis Center to take on the Graceland University JV Yellowjackets from Lamoni, Iowa. SFCC emerged with an 81-76 victory in a game that featured six lead changes and four ties.

SFCC took a 12-point lead in the first half that would be the largest by either team in the contest. Graceland made a nice run to cut the SFCC lead to 36-33 at halftime.

"I'm thankful that we won the game" said Head Coach Matt Brown. "But I was really disappointed in our attitude and our effort tonight."

Freshman guard Tim Leavell led three Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 29 points. He knocked down 10 of 11 shots from the field and seven of eight from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore guard Andre (A.J.) Walker and freshman guard/forward LePear Toles contributed 14 points each. Sophomore guard Derrick Brock, Jr. pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Toles led in assists with five and tied for team lead in steals with freshman forward Colby Honeycutt and freshman guard Dru Smith with two each.

Jan.13, Three Rivers Community College at Sedalia

The Roadrunners took on Three Rivers Community College Raiders from Poplar Bluff and emerged with a 76-61 victory. The game featured two lead changes and two ties. It was the Region 16 opener for SFCC and a Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game.

The Roadrunners jumped out to an early 12-4 lead with less than 13 minutes to go in the first half. SFCC extended the advantage to 35-17 late in the first half, the largest held by either team in the game. At halftime, the Roadrunners had a 35-20 lead. Both teams scored 41 points in the second half.

"We had to mix-and-match our lineup with some different guys tonight, which is kind of what you get this time of year," said Brown. "I thought that Derrick Brock, Jr. played well tonight … Tyreek played well, and we had some other guys step up tonight."

SFCC won the rebounding battle 46-30. The bench scored 30 points.

Freshman guard Tyreek Scott-Grayson led four Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 17 points. He tied with Walker for team lead in rebounds with nine each. Walker contributed 14 points, dished out a team-high seven assists and led the team in steals with five. Smith added 12 points. Freshman guard/forward Caleb Coleman added 10 points.

The Roadrunners record currently stands at 14-3, 1-0 in Region 16, 3-0 in the MCCAC. The Roadrunners will host the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds in another important Region 16 and MCCAC game at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Davis Center.
