Roadrunners Jan. 6 game recap

Jan. 6, Johnson County Community College at Overland Park, Kansas

The Roadrunners returned to game action following the holiday break on Jan. 6. SFCC (12-3) traveled to Overland Park and emerged with a hard-fought 70-68 victory over Cavaliers.

SFCC took a 39-35 lead into halftime. In the second half, SFCC built a 10-point lead, the biggest held by either team. The Cavaliers refused to go away and took a one-point advantage with less than 30 seconds remaining.

SFCC freshman guard/forward LePear Toles drew a foul, calmly went to the free-throw line and knocked down a pair of free throws. SFCC forced a jump ball on the next inbound with possession going to the Roadrunners. Sophomore guard Andre (A.J.) Walker, received the inbound pass and was fouled. Walker made one of two free throws to seal the victory.

"We were a little bit rusty after our time off over the winter break," said Head Coach Matt Brown. "It is always tough to win on the road; any road win is a good win for us."

Walker led the Roadrunners in scoring with 16 points. He finished his double-double by pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds and dishing out six assists. Toles contributed 15 points and registered a team-high three steals. Freshman guard Dru Smith pitched in with 12 points. Freshman guard Tyreek Scott-Grayson added 11 points. Freshman guard/forward Caleb Colemanregistered a team-high two blocked shots.

SFCC returns to the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on Tuesday night, Jan. 9, to take on Graceland University junior varsity. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
