Roadrunners go 1-2 at John A. Logan Jamboree

The Roadrunners traveled to Carbondale, Illinois, to participate in the John A. Logan Jamboree. The event was held at the Southern Illinois University Student Recreation Center. The format of the scrimmages consisted of two 22-minute running clock halves.

SFCC took on Lakeland in its first scrimmage at the event and won 38-27.

"We took the lead to begin the game," said Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Kevin Thomas. "Lakeland came back, and it was a back-and-forth throughout the first half. The score was tied at 20 at halftime. The second half our defense was better, and we were able to create some separation. We did a better job of sharing the basketball in the second half."

Freshman guard Onteral Woodson Jr. scored 10 points to lead SFCC in scoring. Sophomore forward Amir Smith and freshman center Isaac Bassey tied for the team lead in rebounds with five. Sophomore guard Vonny Irvin dished out a team-high six assists. Freshman forward Jamar Kemp registered a team-high four steals.

SFCC took on the host John A. Logan in their second scrimmage. SFCC trailed at halftime 35-21 and fell by 64-53.

"John A. Logan is a very talented team," said Thomas. "They got off to a great start. We made a run at them in the second half cutting the lead to about five with five minutes to go. We had a stretch where we turned the ball over, missed a layup, missed a free-throw, and then we had to foul. They were able to push the lead back up to about 10 points to finish the game."

Kemp led the Roadrunners in scoring with 12 points. He also led the team in steals with five. Irvin and sophomore guard Corey Mendez added 10 points each. Woodson, Irvin and Mendez tied for the team lead in assists with three. Smith and Mendez tied for the team lead in rebounds with five.

SFCC took on Shawnee in their final scrimmage. Shawnee led 35-22 at halftime and emerged with a 65-36 victory. Mendez and Smith tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points. Smith led the team in rebounds with seven. Mendez dished out a team-high three assists and also registered two blocked shots. Bassey led the team in steals with two.

"Shawnee played well the entire day," said Thomas. "I was disappointed with our effort and execution. We just got out played in every facet of the game."

SFCC will open the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the McDonald's Classic against College of Faith in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
