Roadrunners Set to Begin Golf Program

State Fair Community College (SFCC) has added golf to its growing athletic department. The Roadrunners will begin play in the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA) with a tournament in O'Fallon, Illinois at Stonewolf Golf Club on Sunday, Sept. 29 under the direction of Head Coach Wayne Ogle, a PGA Professional. In the NCCGA, teams consist of at least five, but not more than eight, student-athletes with the best five scores counting as part of the team score.

Ogle has had to accomplish quite a few things in a short period in order to get the program started.

"We had a meeting for anyone who was currently enrolled at SFCC and interested in playing college golf," said Ogle.

Ogle is happy with the way practices at the Sedalia Country Club have gone thus far.

"Practices are a challenge, because most student-athletes will schedule their classes around practice," said Ogle. "Our players didn't know they were going to be having practices when they scheduled their classes. So, we have to work around their schedule."

The Roadrunners currently have five players on the roster for the fall season, which features Brenden Bauer, Hayden Brogdon, Brandon Plummer, Kendall Weymuth, and Tucker Williams.

"My goal for our team this fall is to play disciplined golf," said Ogle. "We want to make a game plan and stick to it throughout the round, regardless of how things are going. Golf is a game with multiple parts to it. We are working on improving different parts of each player's game. We are trying to improve each player's game individually. As a team, we are going to put together a game plan of how to play each course. My challenge to our players is to be dedicated to the plan and not let what happened on the previous hole dictate what they do on the next hole."

SFCC will also participate in two other golf tournaments during the fall season. On Oct. 4-5 SFCC will travel to Maryville, Missouri to play the Mozingo Lake Golf Club. The Roadrunners will round out the fall season on Oct. 26 and 27 playing the Eagle Knoll Golf Club in Hartsburg, Missouri.

Coach Ogle would like for anyone who is interested in being a part of golf program during the spring season to contact him.

"We need to get our name out there and let people know that State Fair Community College has a men's and women's golf program," said Ogle. "In the future, we're going to transition into the NJCAA. So, we are going to need to field both a men's and women's team. I need to recruit at minimum eight men and eight women who want to be student-athletes and come and play golf for the Roadrunners."
