SFCC to Host Annual W-K Holiday Shoot-Out

Local basketball fans will have an opportunity to see some of the best high school basketball players and teams in the area at the 18th annual W-K Holiday Shoot-Out. The Shoot-Out features 52 local teams playing 26 games throughout the month of December. The event runs Wednesday, Dec. 12-15 and Dec. 27-28 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on State Fair Community College campus.

The idea for the Shoot-Out came 18 years ago from Tom Knight, who was the athletic director at Smith-Cotton.

"We implemented it in the spring and summer of 2001 and had the first Shoot-Out that December," said SFCC Athletic Director Darren Pannier. "He had the idea to bring in different opponents for the area schools to play. After he (Knight) gave me the idea, I just starting calling local high schools and asking them if they would play a school from outside their area."

The games on Wednesday, Dec. 12 consists of a doubleheader between Northwest and Bunceton. The girls' contest tips off at 6 p.m. The boys' contest will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The games on Thursday, Dec. 13 feature a doubleheader between Tuscumbia and New Franklin. The girls' game begins at 4:30 p.m., while the boy's contest will follow at 6 p.m.

The games on Friday, Dec. 14 will be two doubleheaders the first is between LaMonte and Chilhowee. The girls' contest will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the boys' contest at 6 p.m. Green Ridge and Slater will play a girls' game at 7:30 and a boys' contest 9 p.m.

The Dec. 15 games will begin with a girls' contest between Smithton and Norborne with a tipoff scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and the boys' contest between the two teams scheduled for noon. Santa Fe and Calvary Lutheran (girls) tipoff at 1:30 p.m., followed by the boys' game at 3 p.m.

St. Paul Lutheran and Sacred Heart will play a doubleheader with the girls' game at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 6 p.m. The final games will pit Springfield Glendale against Smith-Cotton (boys) at 7:30 p.m. and Battle will take on the Smith-Cotton girls at 9 p.m.

After a break for the Christmas holiday, action resumes on Dec. 27 with a doubleheader between Otterville and Ballard. The girls' game will tipoff at 4:30 p.m., followed by a boys' game at 6 p.m. A doubleheader between Concordia and Lincoln will close out the action with a girls' contest at 7:30 p.m. followed by a boys' game at 9 p.m.

The final day (Dec. 28) of the Shoot-Out, will begin at noon with a girls' game between Tipton and Crest Ridge and the boys' game at 1:30 p.m. A doubleheader will follow between Macks Creek and Montrose, with the girls' contest at 3 p.m., followed by the boys' game at 4:30 p.m. The final doubleheader of the 2018 W-K Shoot-Out will start with a girls' contest between Butler and Cole Camp at 6 p.m. and the boys' contest between Butler and Cole Camp at 7:30 p.m. will close out this year's event.

The title sponsor of the event is W-K Chevrolet. The co-sponsors are McDonald's, Pummill's Sporting Goods, Culligan, Pepsi, Ditzfeld & Weaver Charter Service, BackBone of Health, Hank's Portables and Septic Services, and Jones Bros. Marine.

"The sponsors help make sure that the doors stay open, as this is a costly event" said Pannier. "We are honored to host the Shoot-Out and welcome these kids, their families, and supporters to State Fair Community College."

The admission prices for the event are five dollars per day for adults.  Kids 12 and under are admitted free.
