Eight State Fair Community College (SFCC) student-athletes have received National Junior College Athletic Association Academic Student-Athlete awards for their work in the classroom. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.6 or higher grade point average for an entire academic year to be eligible to receive this recognition.
Freshman women's soccer player Andrea Ramos of Waynesville earned First Team honors. Students receiving NJCAA All-Academic First Team awards must maintain a 4.0 grade point average.
Second Team honors went to freshman men's basketball player Lloyd Bryan Jr. of Cheltenham, Maryland; sophomore softball player Macy Buzzanga of Knob Noster; freshman baseball player Brett Holden of St. Joseph; and sophomore softball player Emily Wilson of Oak Grove. Student-athletes earning Second Team honors have to maintain a 3.80 to 3.99 grade point average.
Third Team honors went to freshman softball player Alissa Collette of Strafford; sophomore baseball player Gavin Jones of Sedalia; and sophomore softball player Victoria McCloud of Houston, Missouri. Students earning Third Team honors maintained a GPA of 3.60 to 3.79.
"These awards speak very highly of the type of student-athletes that our coaches are recruiting," said Athletic Director Darren Pannier. "Our coaches put a lot of emphasis on the academic performance of our student-athletes. Our retention and graduation rates are higher than those of the general student population. Our student-athletes deserve a lot of credit for the amount of time they put into their work in the classroom as well as on the fields and courts. Now the challenge for everyone involved in our athletic department is to continue to raise the bar and have more Academic Student-Athlete Award recipients next year."
