Smith Makes College Choice

State Fair Community College (SFCC) sophomore guard Dru Smith of Kansas City, Missouri recently signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Southern Arkansas University, a NCAA Division II University in Magnolia, Arkansas.

During his sophomore year, Smith started 13 games and played in 26. Smith scored 11.5 points per game, shot 73.4 percent in free throws, averaged 3.5 rebounds and one steal per game. Smith scored a season-high 23 points against Highland Community College-Kansas and earned second-team All-Region 16 honors and second-team All-Conference in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference.

“Dru is a player who can play the off guard, as well as the small forward in a smaller lineup,” said Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Matt Brown. “He’s played against good competition here. I think he will be able to help them on the perimeter, especially defensively.”

As a freshman, Smith played in 28 games starting in 13. Smith averaged 73.1 percent from the line and shot 37.8 percent from the field where he averaged 8.9 points per game.

“Dru has been a really good defender for us his entire career here,” said Brown. “His perimeter shooting got better as the year went along. Dru will be the fifth student-athlete from this year’s team to continue his academic and athletic career at a four-year university.”
